A large number of specialists in a wide range of techniques are needed to maintain the rich and varied collections of works of art curated by Patrimonio Nacional in an optimal state of conservation.
Some of the specializations that the Restoration Department maintains have a long historical tradition, and this is why Patrimonio Nacional's restorers are unparalleled in other similar bodies.
The Department is divided into three main areas, one of which comprises the workshops called Decorative Arts which includes Saddlery, Gilding and Stucco, Tapestries, Textiles, Cabinetwork, Watchmaking, Porcelain, Metals and Armoury and Pietre Dure. Another area covers the workshops of the so-called Fine Arts and includes Painting, Sculpture, Books and Documents and Stonemasonry. The third area of the Department is made up of technicians of the analysis, chemistry and radiology laboratories where the research work of the material side of the works of art is done, as basic information for restoration work.
The Department of Restoration not only deals with interventions on the works of art in the various workshops, but also carries out preventive conservation programs on the various collections, documentary resources, palaces and gardens and is also responsible for the study, tendering and supervision of works carried out at the various Royal Sites.
