The Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales, in the heart of Madrid, is a place of worship and tranquillity where visitors can appreciate the contrast with the hustle and bustle of the capital. It was the wish of its founder, Joanna of Austria (1535-1573), the youngest daughter of Emperor Charles V and a princess of Portugal, to turn the palace where she was born, and which belonged to her father's treasurer, into a monastery for Poor Clare nuns. It was here that she set up her quarters after her return from Portugal, and her body rests in the chapel that occupies the same space in which she came into this world.
A unique space to evoke the Spanish Habsburgs of the 16th and 17th centuries
